Big news out of San Diego Comic Con for Disney fans as Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios announced a brand new attraction for Disneyland. Normally big announcements about theme parks are made in different settings but since this is Marvel and fans are clamoring for Marvel to be in Disneyland, this was fitting.
In the summer of 2017, guests who visit Disney California Adventure at the Disneyland Resort will be able to experience Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! Disney Imagineers will begin work in early 2017 to re-skin and redevelop the Tower of Terror into Tanaleer Tivan’s Guardians fortress-like museum.
Guardians of the Galaxy Ride
The ride premise is that Tivan has opened up his new museum filled with all sorts of relics and species that culminate in his latest acquisition, The Guardians of the Galaxy. While the rest of the Guardians are trapped, Rocket has escaped and will call upon guests to help him on a daring adventure to help rescue his friends. Guests will board a gantry lift as as they journey out on a daring adventure. They’ll experience a breathtaking free-fall sensation and all new visuals and audio effects as the gantry lift rocks to the beat of music inspired by the film’s popular soundtrack.
The ride project is being lead by Joe Rohde, the Imagineer and Lead Designer of Animal Kingdom, and will be joined by counterparts at Marvel to bring authenticity to the new ride. Rhode, in sharing the preview of the new attraction, talked about what exciting things can be expected.
The setting is a kind of fortress that’s owned by the mysterious Collector and it’s packed with

creatures and his latest acquisitions from across the universe. Now he has imprisoned the Guardians of the Galaxy and they’re hanging in display cases over a giant abyss. The captor doesn’t know it but Rocket Raccoon has escaped and is enlisting our aid—all the guests—to help the Guardians in a breakout scheme. And the rest is comical chaos; a very funny, very irreverent story and a really wonderful addition to Disney California Adventure.
Kevin Feige, Marvel President, said that he was excited to be working with Joe Rhode and all of the Imagineers at Disney in helping develop a ride that helps tell such an immersive story just as the movies do.
The incredibly talented Disney Imagineering team has found a way to harness the spirit which drove Guardians of the Galaxy’s success to create this immersive experience. With its debut timed to the release of the film’s sequel, we are eager to present the attraction to the millions who visit Disney California Adventure and place them in the center of the action as they join in a mission alongside our audacious Guardians of the Galaxy team.
