Shanghai Disneyland is Officially Open

SHANGHAI (June 15, 2016)  On the eve of the Grand Opening of Shanghai Disney Resort, Disney celebrated the historic occasion with a star-studded, two-hour broadcast that captured the extraordinary spirit of the first Disney resort in Mainland China. The broadcast included a Grand Opening gala concert with world-renowned composer Tan Dun conducting the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra in an inspiring performance of his original composition, “Igniting the Magical Dream.”  The one and only Mickey Mouse joined the enchanting gala and Disney stories came to life with dazzling projections and lighting on the Enchanted Storybook Castle. 

Shanghai Disneyland is now officially open to the public as the opening ceremony and dedication have taken place. It was a big affair for The Walt Disney Company as they finally open the park that has been in work for decades.

The Grand Opening of Shanghai Disneyland was a star studded event that marked all the hard work that went into developing and building the park which is the first Disney Resort for Mainland China. The park cost over 5 billion dollars to build and is home to the largest castle of any of the Disney Parks. Shanghai Disney Resort offers a distinctive Disney experience that reflects the beauty and unique identity of today’s China.

The Grand Opening spectacular included world-renowned composer Tan Dun conducted the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra in an inspiring performance of his original composition, “Igniting the Magical Dream” while Disney stories came to life on Enchanted Storybook Castle. 

“Music has always been an essential part of Disney’s legendary storytelling,” Disney Chairman and chief executive officer Bob Iger said. “On the eve of our Grand Opening, we are proud and honored to have Tan Dun tell the spectacular story of Shanghai Disney Resort through original music that perfectly captures the very soul of this special place; and we are thrilled to have such renowned Chinese artists sharing their talents to bring this magical story to life in this extraordinary, historic performance.”

The two-hour special was broadcast on China’s Dragon TV. Here in the United States you can watch it on the Disney Channel, Disney Junior and Disney XD Thursday, June 16, at 8 p.m.and on Friday, June 17, at 10 p.m., on Freeform.
