Star Wars: The Force Awakens Breaks Box Office Records

When it was announced that Walt Disney Studios had purchased LucasFilm and the rights to Star Wars for $4 Billion dollars everyone wondered if Disney had made a mistake or would it pay off like its purchase of Marvel. Well, after completing the first of the new films and releasing it worldwide it appears all the hype is paying off.

The film broke records opening weekend as it debuted to $248 million dollars domestically and $281 million dollars overseas for a global total of $529 million dollars, surpassing the debut of “Jurassic World” from earlier this summer.

The Christmas weekend was also record breaking as the film became the highest grossing for Christmas Day sales as it raked in $49.3 million dollars breaking the previous record held by Sherlock Holmes. Overall the second week sales have allowed the film to garner over $1 billion dollars letting Star Wars: The Force Awakens beat another record held by Jurrasic World, breaking $1 billion globally in 12 days.

So not only does the film now hold the title as the fastest film in history to gross $1 billion dollars globally. It now holds over 35 records some for being the fastest movie to cross $100, $150, $200, $300, $350, $400, $450 and $500 million as well as holding the largest three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine and ten day grosses among others.

The next big record that will be broken is that of Avatar’s domestic box office total of $760.5 million dollars. Star Wars has only been in theaters for less than 2 weeks and is now only $215.9 million dollars away from taking that box office crown.
