As Hurricane Matthew nears the florida coast, Walt Disney World will close all of its Florida parks for only the fourth time since it opened its doors in 1971. The hurricane which is expected to make landfall in Florida late Thursday night has cause many closures and cancellations at the theme parks in the region.

The unprecedented decision is based on an abundance of caution for its guest as well as its cast members.

Based on the most recent forecasts for Hurricane Matthew, Walt Disney World theme parks, water parks, Disney Springs, miniature golf courses and ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex will all be closed today by 5 p.m. and will remain closed through Friday, Oct. 7. Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Magic Kingdom Theme Park is also canceled for tonight and tomorrow.

This is only the fourth time for the resort to close. It happened in 1999 for Hurricane Floyd, 2004 for Hurricane Frances and Jeanne. The resort was also evacuated after the attack on September 11th.

Walt Disney World will close its parks for just the fourth time since its opening as Hurricane Matthew threatens to make landfall in Florida late Thursday night.
